Program Goals

Tie God’s Word and the teachings of Martin Luther into the daily lives of the children; guide the children to grow and live in faith; teach of God’s love and forgiveness through Jesus Christ; and walk alongside parents and support them in this important responsibility.

The curriculum is customized to meet the specific needs of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. The weekly lessons follow the ELCA Lectionary and Luther’s Small Catechism.  Children in Kindergarten through 5th grade will usually study the same Bible stories taught in worship service.  Families can then share the lesson and grow in faith together as individuals and families.

In addition to a weekly Bible story, the children will learn Lutheran traditions and beliefs through discussion, games, and activities. They will continue to review and build on their knowledge each year.

Suggested Readings:  Understanding the Bible by Stephen Harris (This is a college textbook.  Used copies and older editions work fine.  The book provides more in-depth consideration of the material we cover in class).

WELCA Circles

The Women of the ELCA (WELCA) sponsors circles (small groups) for women to gather for fellowship and Bible study.

Circles are Bible study groups for women of all ages. The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd currently has nine circles, most meeting once/month (except one that meets every Friday morning before work). Circles meet in the church or in homes or other places in the community. All women are welcome to join these groups.

Most study from the monthly “Gather” magazine. Extra copies of this magazine can be found by the women’s bulletin board near the bathrooms in the narthex. Please feel free to use the magazine for the meeting, then return it so others may be able to explore this same possibility.

A list of the circles (when and where they meet, and a contact person for each) is posted on the women’s bulletin board.  Try out a circle and see what you think!  All women are invited!

If you think you would like to join a circle, let someone in that circle know, and the LCGS Women will give you a free one-year subscription to the “Gather” magazine! Hope to see you there!
